The year was 1649 and England was in the midst of a civil war. Seeking refuge from enemies of the crown, Charles II escaped to Jersey, a small channel island off the coast of France loyal to the British Empire. Following his father’s execution, Charles II was given ownership of the American colonies and chose to split them up among fellow members of the royal house and close friends. As a thank you for protecting him during the war, Charles granted the land between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers to Jersey statesman Sir George Carteret who promptly named his land “New Jersey.”
