“I thought we had a pretty good mascot. But when we showed up at Iowa State and they had a real tornado, that’s the real deal.”
These were the words uttered by University of Colorado coach Gary Barnett after an upset defeat at the hands of the Iowa State Cyclones football team. The day was November 12, 2005, and a tornado had touched down in ISU’s hometown of Ames, Iowa. Fans were urged either to go to the stadium parking lot to watch over the storm or to leave and seek shelter in the Hilton Coliseum. With their opponents distracted by the threat of the storm, the Cyclones were able to battle their way to a 30-16 victory. The game has since become the stuff of legend.
